What Does Adoption in Today's World Look Like?
Adoption is the legal transfer of guardianship of a child. Many of us have the concept in our mind that adoption means you will never see your baby again. The truth is that you get to choose the level of contact you want with your child. In fact, some of the choices you get to make include:
Choosing your adoption plan
Choosing the family who adopts your child
Choosing the type of relationship and communication you will have with your child and the adoptive family
What is An Adoption Plan?
Adoption plans outline the details of your adoption arrangement and include the level of contact you want with the child and the adoptive family. There are three different kinds of adoptions to consider: Open Adoption, Semi-Open Adoption, and Closed Adoption.
Open Adoption is like a bridge that allows different levels of contact between you, the child, and the adoptive family. That contact could mean visits, chats over the phone or video calls, sharing photos, or getting updates from the adoptive family. In a Semi-Open Adoption, communication flows through an adoption agent. This intermediary facilitates all exchanges between you and the adoptive parents. The adoptive parents send updates and photos to the adoption agent, who then shares them with you. This setup allows you to stay informed about your child's progress while maintaining your anonymity. Then there is a Closed Adoption where your identity and contact details remain confidential and undisclosed to the adoptive family. There is no direct contact between you, your child, and the adoptive family. This option resonates with those that seek closure and wish to embark on a new chapter in their lives.
